The Eastlands share the key differences between Finnish and English, and how these differences affect one's ability to learn and use the new language. Thomas Eastland was born in Pennsylvania, and graduated from Penn State and MIT. He has worked as a Marine aviator, an Operations Manager on the Atlantic and Pacific Missile Ranges, a NASA Test Controller and Operations Manager, and a consultant and teacher for the Canadian Space Agency. His wife and co-author, Arja (Miettinen), was born in Imatra, Finland, and emigrated to Montreal, where she worked as a hair stylist and sales representative for ladies wear, and then gourmet coffee and macadamia nuts. They later moved to Hawaii where they owned and operated a coffee farm and vacation rental, and finally migrated to Finland, where their book was born.
